With Julie To Maryland: June 18-22, 2007
|
What I Did On My Summer Vacation, by Anne Mancine Julie and I took a little vacation together to Bel Air, Maryland. Julie mapped an interesting route through Pennsylvania's old tourist country, along the historic Lincoln Highway. Once in Maryland, we visited some of the sights within an hour of her apartment. Andrew was in New York City doing school work and Ben stayed in Kent with the dogs, so it was just us! |
= Day One: On the Lincoln Highway in Pennsylvania =
| We picked up the Lincoln Highway 10 minutes west of Greensburg, PA. We followed it through Ligonier, Jennerstown, and Stoystown before arriving at Lookout Point on Mount Ararat. | |

A pleasant place for a great lunch in Bedford, PA |
A classic old filling station |
| Bedford had a nice old-timey downtown section and the big coffee pot building. We also saw the famous Igloo ice cream stand in Everett, then drove on through Chambersbug, Gettysburg, New Oxford, and West York. We could have spent even more time along this old route - there is a lot to see. | ||

= Day Two: North Into Delaware =
We started the day with a one-hour drive up to Newark, Delaware and University of Delaware, where Julie ran errands and I read local newspapers in the university library. Then we were off to explore the grounds and gardens of the Hagley Museum and learn about DuPont's gunpowder empire. |

| The grounds were beautiful, the weather was sunny and breezy, and crowds were light. Luckily we missed all the Stanley Steamers scheduled to arrive at the museum the very next day. | ||

= Day Three: Baltimore =
| Even after the morning rush, traffic on I-95 south into Baltimore was pretty frightening. We arrived at the National Aquarium to find it swarming with children and grandparents. But our concerns were quickly forgotten as we marveled at the incredible exhibits within. Photos were nearly impossible, but this was a fantastic place. Julie vowed to bring Andrew here soon. |

= Day Four: Havre De Grace and Bel Air =
| Thursday morning and the first day of Summer! After a tasty breakfast at the Greek Village Family Restaurant in Bel Air, we decided to return to Havre De Grace to enjoy a sunny day outside. We ran some errands and got to Havre De Grace for lunch at Ken's Steak & Rib, where we had crabmeat appetizers and oyster sandwiches. We spent two hours exploring the lovely old downtown on foot. |
